Jose Luis Magana is a Mexican-American photojournalist based in Washington D.C. with a strong drive for the news. He has extensive experience working in Latin America and Washington, where he currently covers Congress, The White House, State Department, Federal Courthouse, demonstrations, entertainment, sports and anything else that happens in and around the city. He was part of the Associated Press photo team who covered the Jan. 6 Insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, his photographs of the rioters climbing the west wall of the U.S. Capitol and those of rioters breaking the APTV equipment have been published widely. He has covered the inaugurations of Presidents Obama, Trump and Biden, as well as many other important events. He was a former staff photographer for The Associated Press based in Mexico City covering a wide range of subjects, significant events and people in the area. I have seen him wade through deep flood waters during a hurricane on Mexico’s Pacific coast to get the shots he needed, and hike for miles through mudslides in Mexico to reach victims. By far his most impressive talent is the ability to see the news coming, get ahead of it and position himself to tell the story. He has the ability to understand and connect with communities and photograph them in a way that is both sensitive and compelling. Jose Luis has the ability to portray moments in a singular way and always try for the best photo no matter how unimportant the assignment might be. Mr. Magana works regularly with The Associated Press and other wire services outlets. He also works with NGOs, shoots corporate events and shares his expertise to assist with photographic projects.
